TEACHER TALK IN AN EFL CLASSROOM 

(RSBI CLASSROOM)

Abstrak: Masalah utama yang dibahas dalam penelitian ini yaitu, (1) karakteristik komunikatif tuturan guru (TG), (2) karakteristik pedagogis TG, (3) berbagai jenis modifikasi TG untuk menghasilkan input yang mudah dipahami oleh siswa, dan (4) faktor yang melatarbelakangi guru memodifikasi tuturannya. Teori yang digunakan adalah fungsi komunikatif TG (Lei, 2009), modifikasi sintaksis dan pengujaran (Chaudron, 1988), rantai ujaran fonetis (Roach, 1983), dan peta fonetis internasional (2005). Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif yaitu penelitian sebuah studi kasus. Subjek penelitian ini adalah dua orang guru bahasa Inggris kelas RSBI. Data penelitian ini berupa segala jenis informasi pada TG dalam interaksi di kelas yang berhubungan dengan permasalahan penelitian. Hasil analisis dan pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa karakteristik komunikatif TG kedua subjek memperlihatkan dampak yang baik dalam proses interaksi guru-siswa di kelas.

Abstract: The main problems discussed in this study are namely, (1) the characteristics of communicative teacher talk (TG), (2) TG pedagogical characteristics, (3) various types of TG modification to produce an easily understood input for students, and (4) underlying factors that makes the teacher modify his talk. The theory used is the communicative function of TG (Lei, 2009), modification of syntax and speech (Chaudron, 1988), phonetic speech chain (Roach, 1983), and the international phonetic map (2005). This research is a case study of descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this study is two RSBI grade English teacher. These research data are in the form of all kinds of information on the TG in the interaction in class-related research problems. The results of the analysis and discussion show that the characteristics of communicative TG both subjects showed a good impact in the process of teacher-student interaction in class.
